It seems strange that Votto is having such a slow ST… 5 for 36 .169BA and 0-XBH. He’ll probably kick it gear when the season starts up.

The forecast for metro NYC is +/- 14″ today. Not much of a warm up next week… so there will be many parking spots at Citibank covered with large amounts of snow for the Metsies home opener. Play Ball.

I’d like to see how Sexton does, if he gets to the mound today. He got 5 starts in June last season for Peoria with varying success. He should find a spot in the PB bullpen to open ’18. 51K/47IP 2.38ERA 1.21WHIP and.256BA. There were many positives written about him during last season…. he’ll be 24 in July.

Wong was picked off by Harvey. I wonder if this will leave him hesitant to get x-large leads and perhaps cut into his steals. Being picked off must be the worst that could happen for him on the field. I’m sure its still in his head.

Thanks cc, that answers some questions. That bunch of starting candidates at MEM is crowded, but it looks like Flaherty, Helsley, Hudson and Gant are givens.

I haven’t heard any commentary about the fate of Gant for ’18. The 2.0 I/P on Sunday didn’t help determine if he’ll be in the MEM rotation or the bullpen. We’ll have a better idea if his next outing will be as a starter or reliever. If they plan on him starting he could be a candidate, along with Flaherty, for 1st starter up to the big team. Time will tell.

Just guessing that many contributors here were wrapped up in the tournament. How are the brackets looking?
If you have 1/2 of the sweet 16 teams….. you’re doing well.

    From MLB’s Joe Treeza:

If shortstop Paul DeJong avoids a sophomore slump and second baseman Kolten Wong continues to improve, St. Louis’ offense could rank abmong baseball’s most dynamic.

When one looks at the Card’s lineup, “baseball’s most dynamic’ doesn’t come to mind. Very optimistic outlook loaded with ifs.

Its 12 degrees in Montreal right now, wind chill of +1. It will be cold, very cold there next Mon and Tue. It should get the team acclimated for their opener a week from Thu. vs. NYM. New York is also having a cold snap that will continue into next week. A 5-8 inch snow is forecasted for the 21st and another coating on Sun. the 25th. What a lousy month its been around the metro NYC area, 2-4 in. snowfalls every five days or so, cold and windy. Not welcoming for baseball.

With Pena getting a lot of chatter as Molina’s backup, that would mean Kelly going to AAA and Knizner going to AA to work on his defense.

Martinez’ bench spot seems secure so leaves two spots. GGarcia will get one and Munoz the other. Likely Voit and Bader get squeezed because the bench spots are limited.

So far the 5 starters have survived ST healthy. The 8-man pen is set with the only decision left is if Gregerson is ready to go. Mujica and Motte are there if not. There are several other options that will likely start out at AAA.

The Memphis roster will be loaded again. There will be a strong rotation no matter who the five are. The BP will have the STL 40-man BP exiles and those starters not included in the rotation, plus the additional signees. No trouble finding a group of seven there. I count 11 candidates.

It is looking more and more like Kelly will be at AAA with Baron, Voit, Ravelo, Mejia, Tovar, Wisdom and Edman at SS (with Munoz in STL). The OF will be the the meat of the order with the combination of Bader, JAGarcia, Mercado and O’Neill with Arozarena if O’Neill can’t go.

11 days to go before NYM. Things could still change.

On the list for the Miami game roster there are two relievers Fabian Blanco (LHP) and Jake Walsh and both are presently on the Johnson City roster. Blanco is 20 and Walsh is 22 and both pitched well last season. Walsh was awarded the relief pitcher of the year for JC by TCN.

Any how I would like to know how they fare if they see action. They may be auditioning for a spot on the Peoria roster.

I’ve been a Cardinals fan for many, many years and have followed them very closely for the last 10 years. IMO, the rotation is suspect and I fear injuries to both Wainwright and Wacha. Mikolas is a mystery, and CMartinez has to prove to me that he is the stopper. I have confidence in Weaver and quite honestly would feel better with Flaherty being in the rotation right now. But he won’t be there until there is an injury or a breakdown. I would like to see what he can offer before he gets buried behind Reyes.

I have confidence in Flaherty. And once Reyes is back to 100% I’ll feel better about the rotation of CMart-Wacha-Weaver-Reyes-Flaherty. The team will need to add some of the other leading prospects and have them pitch for us long-term. As of now, after 2021 the well goes dry as far as top pitching prospects. So having the best of the crop advance to MLB for a number of years now, the team can survive the lapse of solid starters.

From MLB Pipeline…. 25 prospects who have impressed in spring training.

    • Yairo Munoz (Cardinals’ No. 12) seemingly increases his chances of landing on the Opening Day roster every day. Not only does Munoz continue to hit, with a .375/.412/.625 slash line and a pair of homers, but he can play all over the diamond, having logged innings at six positions (2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF) throughout his career.

Munoz is a very valuable player and will no doubt be in St. Louis sometime in ’18…. maybe on opening day.

Valera is the most versatile player in camp. Plus he is a switch-hitter. If ever given a chance to play MLB, his production would go up significantly. Don’t disregard him.

However, I like Bader and Brebbia for the final spots.

So Mozeliak was asked then if the team he has assembled is good enough to win?

“Put it this way,” he said. “We are excited about what we have.”

There are a few on here that will still argue what has happened… but #30 is still the very bottom.

There is a terrific drop off in the lower levels. Perez and Plummer seem to be wasted #1s. The lost draft picks last season hurt. Plus the attention to the international players hasn’t panned out just yet. All of this = #30. Perhaps the well is running dry. We knew this was coming. Other teams are drafting wiser.

It would be nice to have the recent set of prospects at the highest levels to become long term solutions.

The bullpen was solid (9 Ks/4.0 IP) even against the replacements, that is good.

The real drop off will be at Peoria, and continue on down. There will be opportunities for some borderline pitching prospects.
