Jeez…. Mendoza was solid at the plate all season and his average kept going up. I hope that he continues to hit at Peoria. That’s something I look for… success following a promotion.

There are a lot of Cards fans that would not have thought they’d see “final push” posted anywhere on this site this season. Surprise.
side note: I was one of them.

It seems that every day there’s a nice set of arms going in the system. Today is a fine example. Warner, Summerville and Schlesener are capable of being big surprises for the organization.

booyah…. I realize that. It’s just that Clark will be present and it was a very memorable HR for me, as was Yadi’s and Boyer’s grand slam in game 4 of the ’64 Series at Yankee Stadium. I’m also very fond of the Mazeroski HR at Forbes with LFer Berra going back… back…. looking up….

bc…. many of the “experts” that rank prospects base their lists on “potential”. Examples of that are FANGRAPHS, which on 1/29/17 ranked the top 24 prospects plus a group of 18 that were also mentioned…. no Helsley at all. Prospects 1500 on 1/18/17 ranked Helsley 26th and MLB on 2/23/17 didn’t have Helsley in their top 30. That is underrating, perhaps because he came out of Northeastern State or because at the time his velocity was lower and that turns off some who believe velocity is a prerequisite for premier prospects.

BUT…. but the Community rankings right here on TCN put him at #13… the highest of all the lists that I used in an “Aggregate” list. That list had Helsley at #23 but he lost points with the above mentioned lists that skim over actual performance in favor of something called “potential”, a very subjective quality. This isn’t the only case of underrating…. there are others.

Some of our prospects are having truly forgettable seasons at Peoria and State College. Some of those that have been put on the back burners are Peoria: John Kilichowski(DL) (pitched terribly early on) -Ronnie Williams (still relevant but would like this season be over with) State College: Anthony Ciavarella (pitched some good games last season in the GCL) Steven Farinaro (was the stopper last season with the same team) Dennis Ortega ( what has happened to him? oh yeah JLopez.)

Tudor was always fun to watch. A great competitor and I guy you could almost bank on for a victory.

Seijas’ avr game score for his 9 Johnson City starts =46. Oviedo’s avr GS is 42 for his 3 State College starts. Oviedo = 51.3 for 6 starts for JC. Small sample but Evan Guillory’s 3 Johnson City starts= 73. Castano’s GS avr. for 10 at State College=63.2.

There’s something different about your picks…. they make total sense. I liked the reasons explained and the insight you have as an AFL vet.

I would go just to see Jack Clark. Who wouldn’t want to see his HR in Dodger Stadium again. It’s wrapped up in my visual memory along with Yadi’s back-breaker vs. the NYM at Shea. Those thoughts still make me smile.

thej….. I think that you enjoy searching thru the rosters of the other MLB teams looking for players that would fill the holes on the Card’s roster. You are in the school of those willing to trade away key prospects for MLB ready players. Sometimes the farm hands that you recommend for dispatch are a little scary and maybe ill-advised.

The players that you deem almost necessary for us to acquire are easier said, and go against the trade history of the organization. I won’t go into that now because there are too many actions that have consequences. The last significant trade we made was the JGarcia deal and the last major acquisition was Fowler (ugh).

I read what you have to say…. sometimes everything, though some comments are repetitive. I’m all in on your right to post whatever you like. One of these days the Cards will made a move to acquire a power bat and most likely it will be someone that you have proposed. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. 🙂 Be well, and there’s no intended complaint here. Yada yada yada.
ps… suggestion, try scouring the minor league rosters for trade bait. It will expand your horizons.

That is really good news. I wonder if he will appear (not as a player) with the Redbirds during their play-offs. I hope that his comeback will be 100%. We won’t find out until ’18. I wish him all the best.

It the organization is all in on the reclamation of Gilmartin, who is rehabbing in the GCL, it may spell the end for Socolovich or Wick. Wick has regressed this season and it now looks like MLB is out of the question for him…. It would also open a spot on the 40 man roster.

f31…. it’s a moot point now but the NYM got a “red Ryder Ryan” a 30th rd. pick in ’16 for Bruce. It was basically a salary dump. Anyway, I still think Grich can break out.

O’Neill, Mercado(to see if he can really hit in the .300s), and Martini(see Mercado) . Maybe Sosa if he can play, he needs the work, a decision will have to be made about his advancement. Arozarena also makes sense.

Flaherty, (we usually send a big guy), Alcantara, Morales(is he really an MLB relief candidate). I could see Mayers going because he is now a “tweener”, he’s been blocked as a starter, the help could push him in the right direction and the F.O. flat out owes it to him.

If the Cards trade Grichuk for Bruce I may need to fly to St Louis to find out what kind of nitwits are running this team. I would be calm at first…. “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” TR.

c…. Yeah, you’re right. I guess with Yadi around the F.O. didn’t consider catching something high on their priority list. The thing is, I don’t expect Molina to be around much longer. IMO I think he’ll be gone either before next season starts or during the season. Now you’ll need a PlanB. Capeche :).

Morales has made the most of his comeback. I can see him in Busch sometime in ’18 if his body holds up.
I’ve remained high on this ex-starter… good move to the BP.

cc…. you may be right about Kelly going on the block with the rise of Knizner, but I don’t think so. Knizner’s stock has gone up big time. Consider that in 53 weeks he went from Johnson City to Springfield AND has been successful. I think he got the chance for that jump because of the lack of good catching at the levels in between. Also, MEM has little in the way of catchers, PB has JEMartinez who has truly struggled and losing ABs to Godoy because is BA is way too low. PEO has a DH/C and an OK catcher that is 24 y.o. and playing his second season at low-A.

The lower levels…..State College has a C that can hit but can’t catch and another that can catch but his bat has been a disappointment. JC has a couple of good catching prospects and the CGL-Cards has a prospect that hasn’t proven himself stateside.

The point being that after Kelly and Knizner, as it stands now, there is a big drop-off. If Kelly is PlanA, then Knizner has to be PlanB. And you have to have at least a PlanB, especially with catchers.

gs…. although I disagree with about 40% of what you are proposing, I still like to hear what the knowledgeable folks have to say about next season’s team makeup. What the F.O. will do over the winter (who knows at this point and we’re usually wrong with trying to speculate) and what happens at Jupiter ultimately will determine who we will actually be running out on the field in ’18 (historically there is a surprise or two.)

Just wondering… are you done with the ’17 club? It sounds like you are getting the wood ready for the hot stove.

Side note: thank you for not making any managerial suggestions.

After all is said and done regarding Edman’s career, how significant is the time Sosa has spent on the DL?

I was thinking that reaching the 40-man roster should be considered a preliminary goal for prospects. That would include prospects that need to be protected from rule-5, a prospect’s position would also be a factor. As the Card’s roster changes for whatever reason, so do a prospect’s chances of becoming a MLer and, in most cases, being on the 40-man roster increases a prospect’s chances significantly. Right now, we have four prospects on the 40-man roster without any MLB time and I would guess that two never will see any.

If you look at, for example, the MLB top-30, 5 have already reached the bigs. (Weaver is now off… Denton on at #30). How many of the remaining 25 hit the 40-man as a prerequisite to being a major-leaguer. How many can you see as having a significant role?
