One can point the finger at the players, at the manager (I’m totally neutral on this) or the coaches, for the troubles facing the big team right now.

But you can’t dismiss the fact that the farm system has declined in recent years and will continue to decline. When the top crop of high level pitchers hopefully enter MLB, what is left is not promising.
Take Hudson, Gomber, Helsley and perhaps Ponce and Woodford away and what you have is.

    MEM: Ellis, Herget, Greene(bp)
SPFD: Jones, O’Reilly, Shew, Tewes, Warner, Pearce, EGarcia
PB: Oxnevad, Walsh, Meisner, Guillory, JCruz, Kruczynski
PEO: Oviedo, Balesteri, Fagalde, Seijas, Rondon
SC: Casadilla, Nicasio, Voyles, Dahlberg, Kraus
JC: ODiaz, DeJesus, Zamora, EdRamirez, Sisk.
GCL: Peirera, Solano, Pirela, DellaValle, Aker

There is some nice talent, but is there anyone listed that presently projects into the majors? There seems to be a number of years remaining to further sink. Is there a lot of trade value there? You’re not seeing any elite type prospects. There are some ranked players here but not one making significant headway. No one that will race through levels.

Now who do you blame for the regression of the farm system? It is the same with the Cardinals and to me very evident.

Its nights like this for Perez that wipe away some of the past two seasons. Its great to see him finally showing off some of his potential and putting together a solid season at short season A ball. After last night, thoughts of Peoria for him abound.

Its not just last night mind you, he has been solid for most of ’18, and just getting better.

What we have more of is overrated underachieving “don’t blame me” whiners that flap off despite knowing it will be disruptive to the team. Did I mention the ME-firsters. This current team is an embarrassment.

Let’s put together a plan to reverse this situation and go into ’19 with our heads up again.

The FO must like that fact that Matheny takes so much heat…. it keeps it off of them. The real culprits in this rapidly growing turmoil. Ya can’t make good lemonade from a bunch of sour lemons. Key word: lemons… as in not working.

There is so much negativity regarding Cardinal baseball right now. It gets worse with every single embarrassing loss.

The deal was made in Dec. ’17, Its now July ’18… the FO never moved on it, just swept it under the carpet.

I guess that the FO has become delusional and is too timid now to do anything. The manager is left to swing in the wind.

There are 3 players who have caused dissension. And their names aren’t Norris or Hicks. MM has been stuck with these players.
    They need to be moved.

Crannie…. only three? Who are the ones that you selected?

This train can’t keep sliding backwards. The FO has derailed the whole organization. Going forward I’d like to see an OF of Bader, O’Neill, Arozarena and Mercado right now at any expense. The ’18 season has been blown up anyway. It improves the defense 110%…. let’s see what we have.

I don’t know what it takes by a player to up his rating. I know that Ozuna gets preferential treatment by the media. (shrugging my shoulders).

I just heard a Fowler for Tulowitzki trade. Two unfortunate large contracts for little return. What have we got to lose? Fowler is persona non grata in STL and the Cards have been rumored to have been looking at Tulo forever.

I know its long but this a comment posted on PD Goold’s Q&A concerning the status of the Cardinals and why it is as it is. IMO, a superior read.

Mo knew about Ozuna’s shoulder issues, yet knowingly made the trade anyway. Not one, not two, but three players Mozo decided to part with, ALL CURRENTLY HAVE MORE HR’S than Ozuna. Yes, both Matt Adams, Randal Grichuk, & Stephen Piscotty all have out homered Ozuna, the bat Mo claimed would solve our middle of the order production problems.

Going further back when Mo traded for RP Jordan Walden as part of the Heyward deal, Mo knew about Walden’s shoulder issues. Walden spent 95% of his 2 yr/6 mil contract with the Cardinals on the DL.

Mo knew when he ill advisedly gave Holland 14 mil, that Holland had struggled during the back half of last season with the Rockies. Yet ignored those warning signals, making the deal anyway. That’s why the Rockies who spent 52 mil on Wade Davis, which was the largest single amount EVER given to a reliever in MLB history, had zero interest in spending a dime on Holland. Holland just might be the biggest bust signing in the history of the Cardinal franchise. And that’s saying a lot for a GM like Mo, who has made countless blunders in recent yrs.

Mo knew when he signed RP Gregerson, that he was coming off the worst season (by far) of his career. Yet he ignored that. Gregerson has spent 90% of this yr on the DL, and he has not one but two different injury issues. Mo signed the overweight Cincinnati Red refugee Brayan Pena, to the largest contract he had ever received before, 5 million. That only for Pena to spend 95% of his time on the DL. Pena was released before the 2nd yr of his contract, they didn’t even bother to attempt to extract something from that investment. Which reminds one of another Mo brilliant signing for 2 yrs Ty Wigginton, who was released after the midway point of the first year, of his 2 yr contract.

Mo knew when he signed Mike Leake to the foolish 5 yr/80 mil dollar contract with the no trade clause, that was BY FAR the largest amount any club had ever paid Leake. And Leake rewarded Mo’s brilliance by losing 60% of his games for the 2 yrs, going 16-24 for his Cardinal career. Mo had to pay a bounty of 33% around 15 mil to get rid of Leake, with 3 yrs still remaining on his deal when he left. Only then to have Leake once again begin to win the moment he arrived in Seatlle, just as Leake had for yrs with the Reds prior to coming to the Cardinals.

Mo know when he decided to dump SP Marco Gonzalez, this upcoming year would be the first in many where Marco was healthy. Last night Marco won his 10th game of the season, he’s currently 10-5 pitching well for the apparent playoff bound Mariners. 10 wins matches the Cardinal rotation leader. And Leake has 8 wins himself. Leake and Gonzalez combined to date, are 18-11 thus far this season with the Mariners.

Getting back to Adams, Mo knew Adams had finally gotten himself in the best playing shape of his career. Mo inexplicably kept Adams for the yrs he was out of shape, enduring weak production. Only then to trade/give away Adams for a single A minor league nobody, who appears destined to remain a minor leaguer. Adams is currently a .283 hitter with 13 hr’s for the Nats, and he has missed part of this season on the DL.

Mo knew when he signed Dexter Fowler to another 5yr/80 mil/no trade blunder of a contract, that again it was by FAR more than any prior club had ever before invested in Fowler. The Cubs who had just won a World Series with Fowler, did not think enough of him to come close to offering him that much, either in yrs or millions. The Fowler mistake unlike the Leake mistake where it only cost Mo 33% in losses on the total amount owed, will look silly by comparison. Mo will probably have to eat 80-90% of the near 50 mil, he still owes the near worthless Fowler. And Fowler can’t even be traded, until he first waives the not trade clauss, in the same manner Leake did. Many players get additional compensation, when waiving a built into the contract no trade clause.

Mozeliak was responsible for appointing Chris Correa to the head of the Cardinal farm system. Correa rewarded that confidence by hacking into the Houston Astro proprietary data system, and is now serving a 4 yr prison sentence. And for any of you who believe Correa was the only one in the Cardinals org in the “loop” on that situation, I’ve got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Speaking of knowing or not knowing Mr. DeWitt needs to be included in this morass. Apparently Mr. DeWitt does not know, that a GM is accountable for his roster construction. And I would suggest anyone come up with another GM worldwide in professional sports, who has made more poor roster choices than Mo over the last 3 yrs. Name the individual–anyone. And not only did Mo not lose his job, this dysfunctional org actually promoted Mo last yr on his recent record, and that horrific body of work. That qualifies as certifiable lunacy.

This story should be an eye-opener to Cards-only fans. The followers of the entire system saw this coming a few years ago and since little has been done to change the course, it has grown worse in leaps and bounds. To demonstrate the severity, after Hudson, Ponce, Helsley and I’ll throw in Woodford, is there any other starting pitcher among the affiliates that projects into MLB? SPFD… maybe one with some hard work and luck, PB… mostly unknowns but possibility of an unforeseen surprise, PEO…. SC…. JC…. GCL…. kind of early to tell, but it doesn’t look promising at all. There is a lot of no-names with very little positive projection. Realistically, none at this point.

To make matters worse, of all the pitchers in the TCN #25 to #50 (9) ranked pitchers, not one has provided any improvement this season. That once promising group in the next wave has fizzled down to MiLB lifers and they will merely be that because there will be a need for any kind of arms.

At first look, I thought this piece would be opinionated. It isn’t at all, its objective and true to the title.

There is little that can be done to salvage this tailspin. There is the possibility of not trading prospects to get MLB players, (something the Cards-only fans were clamoring for, with little knowledge of what they were asking for – which drove me crazy) but actually trading the MLB players for top-notch prospects, a possible re-boot. Nothing else seems possible at this point except perhaps 3or4 for 1 trading of prospects… we have some positional prospect players with potential and value.

I knew that the Cardinals would have to hold on to their top high-level prospects and hope to keep them as part of our rotation for five or six years,(the time needed to refurbish) and stated so often. It was laughable to hear some suggest trading those guys for a power hitter. And this after the FO went 4 for 1 to get our cleanup hitter that isn’t one. Two of those 4 will be sorely missed.

I was hoping that there would be a more pointed explanation(blame) within this piece. I knew the ’17 draft was problematic, as there would be no top of the rotation pitchers added to the system. Yes, the international pitchers signed are generally very disappointing, very. These failures are traced back to the FO, which oversees the draft committee. THE FRONT OFFICE.

Simply stated the continued disappointment of the StL Cardinals will become exponentially worse going forward. Instead of looking to acquire position players to satisfy the only-St.Louis fan base, the Cardinals will need to be trading for any kind of MLB starters with a heartbeat. The MLB Cards will be sinking in the quicksand that they’ve been marched into by the front office.

I’m not even going to mention the imprudent signing of no-star players and paying them the gigantic sums that could have at least put off the foreseeable decline of the Cards for a season or two by investing wisely.

What we are seeing is the signs of a subtle, forced rebuild due to the errors of the front office. How else can it be explained?

I’m terribly sorry that this comment is so negative, but the road ahead is bleak. Cards-only fans are in for a rude awakening when they find the cupboard empty.

In case you missed it…. I’m going to post P-D’s Jeff Gordon’s Report Cards for the Cards. He started yesterday with the pitchers and today with the position players, field staff and Front Office.

    What do you think.

    PITCHERS
    Mikolas – A
    Wacha – A-
    CMartinez – B+
    Flaherty – B
    Gant – C
    Weaver – C-
    Wainwright – incomplete

    Norris – A
    Hicks – A
    Mayers – A-
    Gomber – C+
    Tuivailala – C
    Brebbia – C
    Cecil – C
    Leone – D
    Lyons – D
    Bowman – D
    Holland – F

    POSITION
    Molina – A
    Pena – C
    Kelly – D

    Munoz – A
    JoMartinez – B
    Carpenter – C+
    DeJong – C
    Gyorko – C
    GGarcia – C
    Wong – D+

    Bader – B+
    Ozuna – B
    Pham – C
    O’Neill – C
    Fowler – F

    Field Staff – C-
    Front Office – D

This is one writer’s opinion, so the D given to the Front Office seems generous. They brought in the lowest graded players and say to Matheny “here make these guys All-Stars”. Off with their heads.

The Johnson City pitching staff is a disaster. The last time a starter made it out of the 4th inning was on July 1st. Since then their GS avr has been 36.5, not good. The beginning of their season wasn’t much better. Last season on this date the JC rotation was: ERamirez – Seijas – Oviedo – Schlesener _ Casadilla.

The ’18 bullpen may be worse:
    EPerez 6.43ERA
    Oca 8.00 – 2.22WHIP
    Schmid(13th.Rd) 11.37 – 1.89
    ERamirez 11.85 – 2.41 (inc. 2 starts)
    JrGonzalez 19.73 – 3.23 (inc. 1 start)

A few relievers have been efficient so far: Kelly(20th), Sylvester(UFA), Leahy(17th), and Sisk(16th).

But its their offense that has kept them at 9-10 but only 2 .0 out of first. Machado (.405) and Gorman (looking like a 1st rd. pick) have been driving the attack along with Soto and Riley. Machado needs more of a challenge.

Yep, Perez is making some headway offensively….. .375 in his last 9 games. Peoria could use some mid-INF help and he could move up right now while he is hot. Being sent back down later wouldn’t hurt him since this is his 19 y.o. season. It’s time to see what we got here.
