St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game (Thursday, June 13) in New York, that they have recalled rookie left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera (pronounced hen-e-sis) from Memphis (AAA) and placed rookie right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley (right shoulder impingement) on the 10-day Injured List.

Cabrera, 22, is being recalled for the second time this season.   He’s made a pair of starts for the Cardinals this season, including his Major League debut on May 29 at Philadelphia.  Cabrera’s last outing for the Cardinals came on June 4 in a start vs. Cincinnati.  He was optioned back to Memphis following the game on June 4 after going 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in his two starts with St. Louis that totaled 8.1 innings pitched.

The Dominican-born Cabrera is 3-3 with a 5.84 ERA in 10 games (8 starts) for Memphis this season.  He worked 5.0 innings, allowing one run, while fanning eight in his most recent outing on June 9 at Reno.

Helsley, who was recalled from Memphis on Monday (June 10), worked 1/3 of an inning last night in Miami.  The rookie hurler has made seven relief appearances for the Cardinals this season, going 0-0 with a 3.48 ERA, striking out 12 in 10.1 innings pitched.

Cabrera wears uniform no. 61.

Brian Walton’s take

It is tough to see a top prospect in Helsley on the shelf. The Cardinal Nation’s fifth-ranked prospect missed the last half of 2018 with shoulder issues as well. The Cardinals must surely hope the injury will not have a long-term impact.

It will be interesting what role Cabrera, our ninth-ranked prospect, plays this time up with St. Louis. The Cardinals’ Friday starter is Daniel Ponce de Leon in the spot vacated by injured Adam Wainwright.

Memphis’ roster replacement for Cabrera has not yet been named.
