Trejyn Fletcher/MLB Player Development Program

The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon (Wednesday, June 12) that they have agreed to terms with their 2nd round  (58th player overall) draft selection outfielder Trejyn Fletcher from Deering High School in Portland, Maine in addition to five other 2019 draftees.

The 6-2, 190-pound Fletcher, who was a verbal commit to Vanderbilt University, was the highest level draft selection of a high school position player from the state of Maine.  The right-handed hitting Fletcher is a 2019 USA Today All-USA High School Baseball selection who batted .456 with three home runs and 17 stolen bases in 16 games this season during his senior year.

The Cardinals also announced that they have agreed to terms today with right-handed pitcher Tony Locey (3rd round, 96th overall, University of Georgia); catcher Pedro Pages (6th round, 185th overall, Florida Atlantic University); catcher Aaron Antonini (18th round, 545th overall, Middle Tennessee State University); right-handed pitcher Adrian Mardueno (20th round, 605th overall, San Diego State University) and right-handed pitcher Tyler Peck (28th round, 845th overall, Chapman University, Calif.).

The Cardinals to date have reached agreement with seven of their top 10 selections from the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft and 11 of their top 20 selections.

Brian Walton’s take

In an article with his hometown newspaper, centralmaine.com, Fletcher stated he asked for and received an over slot bonus of $1.5 million. That compares to his allocation of $1,214,300. The signing of first-rounder Zack Thompson for under slot saved more bonus money than was needed for Fletcher.

The outfielder also disclosed he will initially be assigned to the Gulf Coast League Cardinals.

Overall, 20 of the Cardinals 40 draft picks have come to terms, with more coming.
