In the 0-5 Monday for the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, Memphis and Palm Beach fell a little short, Peoria was blown out at home, and the Dominican Summer League teams were limited to a run apiece. Player of the Day is Palm Beach second sacker Michael Perri who lifted his season average to a cool .300 with a 4-for-5 night. The Springfield squad took the day off.

Memphis fell to 27-38 on the year with a 6-4 road loss to the Reno Aces on Monday night. Scorching hot leadoff hitter and second baseman Edmundo Sosa led the attack with a single, double, and base on balls. That’s five straight multi-hit games for Sosa and his slash line for June reads .412/.459/.882. Third baseman Drew Robinson hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, but Reno retorted with three runs of their own in the home half and Memphis never caught up.
Jake Woodford started and allowed five runs — but only two earned — across four hard-fought frames requiring 90 pitches. The 22-year-old righty fanned three and walked four. The highly effective bullpen received a shutout inning each from Tommy Layne, Jesus Cruz, and erstwhile major leaguer Dominic Leone.

Springfield off
Springfield (24-39) did not play Monday. They begin a road trip in Midland, Texas on Tuesday.

Palm Beach slipped to 34-28 on the season despite the hitting heroics of Player of the Day Michael Perri, falling 7-5 on Monday to the Hammerheads in a Roger Dean Stadium “road” game. Perri collected four hits for the first time in 2019 and second time in his career, but only crossed the plate once. Center fielder Scott Hurst had three singles, and Chase Pinder had the club’s only homer in addition to a single.
Perry DellaValle started and yielded just three hits in five innings, but one was a two-run homer in the first inning, and the righty also allowed a single tally in the second. Patrick Dayton was charged with his first blown save, allowing Jupiter the tying runs in the sixth inning after the Beach Birds had seized a 5-3 margin in the preceding stanza. Ben Yokley took the loss after permitting two tallies in the seventh.

Peoria took a 10-1 drubbing at home on Monday afternoon at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels, lowering their ledger to 27-36 on the year. Starter and loser Michael Brettell was knocked around for seven hits, including a trio apiece of longballs and doubles, in just 3 2/3 innings pitched. The righty permitted seven runs all told, though only three were actually earned due to two errors he himself committed.
The pen was led by Parker Kelly (brother of Carson), who twirled 2 1/3 shutout innings in his third appearance of the season. Edgar Escobar continued his excellent campaign with a hitless inning, lowering his ERA to 1.61 across 28 innings. Though a flyball pitcher, the 22-year-old Cuban righty is yet to allow a home run in his 50 professional innings.
Teen catcher and cleanup hitter Ivan Herrera had his third straight multi-hit game for the Chiefs with a pair of singles (for half of his team’s total bases), and also gunned down the Kernels’ only would-be base stealer of the game. Herrera is now throwing out 33% on the year, compared to a Midwest League average of 30%. He is also walking more than league average, fanning less, batting 50 points above the league, and logging an isolated slugging 30 points above average. All in a pitcher’s park.

DSL Phillies White 5, DSL Cardinals Red 1
The DSL Cardinals Red fell to 4-4 on Monday morning, dropping a 5-1 road decision to the Phillies. Starter Dionys Guerrero more than pulled his weight, permitting only two hits and one run over five sturdy frames. The 18-year-old Dominican southpaw fanned four and walked two on the day. Taking the loss was 17-year-old righty Oliver Lopez, who yielded a pair of runs while retiring just one batter.
The Red offense could scrape together only four singles, two walks, and a hit batter on the day. Third baseman Luis Andujar was the only man to reach safely more than once, as the 19-year-old singled and was plunked. Designated hitter Sander Mora drew a free pass and stole two bases, his third and fourth of the young season.

DSL Rockies 2 at DSL Cardinals Blue 1
The DSL Cardinals Blue slid to 4-2 on the year with a narrow 2-1 Monday home defeat to the Rockies. The team had a dozen baserunners but went 0-for-11 with men in scoring position, squelching rally after rally. Second baseman Elvin DeJesus singled and drew a walk from the leadoff spot, and fellow 17-year-old Hansel Otamendi (CF) did the same from the second hole, but to no avail as neither teen crossed the plate.
Starter and hard luck loser Reinys Portillo conceded just one unearned run in five innings, as the 18-year-old Venezuelan righty fanned four and walked none. Strapping 19-year-old righty Ronald Suarez (6′ 4″ and 215) had an eventful final three innings with four strikeouts, three walks, two hits, a wild pitch, and three stolen bases permitted. Despite all that, he conceded no runs, earned or otherwise.
