Results for games played Saturday, May 18th.

Memphis 4 at San Antonio 6

Evan Kruczynski (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds couldn’t hold on to an early lead and were defeated at San Antonio on Saturday.

Memphis plated two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.  With Ramon Urias and Joe Hudson on base via a single and a double, pitcher Evan Kruczynski hit a line drive single to center field and both runners scored.

In the third, the lead increased to 4-1.  John Nogowski reached on a fielding error and Lane Thomas doubled to left. Nogowski came home on Urias’ groundout.  Thomas stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.  The Redbirds were unable to add additional runs, however.

Adolis Garcia had two hits.  Kruczynski drove in two to help himself.

In his Triple-A debut, starter Kruczynski pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.  The left hander fanned five.  Hunter Cervenka allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.  Chasen Shreve tossed a scoreless seventh.  Jesus Cruz surrendered two runs in the eighth to take the loss.

Thomas stole his sixth base of 2019.  Urias and Garcia each made throwing errors.

Memphis is 21-21 on the season and in second place in the PCL North, four games back of the Iowa Cubs.

Springfield 6 at NW Arkansas 7

The Cardinals lost a close contest to the Naturals at Arvest Ballpark on Saturday.  The game start was delayed by an hour due to stormy weather.

Randy Arozarena (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Springfield scored first with a run in the first inning.  Johan Mieses singled to left to plate Dylan Carlson, who had reached base on a walk.

In the third, the Cardinals added three more scores to take a 4-0 lead. Carlson again walked, and advanced on a pickoff attempt throwing error.  Randy Arozarena singled and Carlson came in.  Following a stolen base by Arozarena, Evan Mendoza singled to score Arozarena.  Mendoza advanced on a pickoff attempt throwing error and a wild pitch.  Another wild pitch enabled Mendoza to come home.

The Naturals took the lead away by scoring seven runs thereafter, starting with two in the third. Their lead was 7-4 going into the ninth inning, when Jose Martinez and Alberto Triunfel singled.  Carlson reached on fielding error, and both Martinez and Triunfel scored.  The rally ended there, however, one run short of tying the game.

Mieses had two hits, the only Cardinal with multiple hits.

Starter Angel Rondon, newly promoted to Springfield, hurled five innings and gave up four runs on six hits.  The right hander struck out four and walked two.  Hector Mendoza surrendered two runs in the sixth and took the loss.  Ronnie Williams pitched 2/3 scoreless, and Kodi Whitley finished with 1 1/3 innings in which he allowed one run.

Arozarena stole his second base of the season and Mieses stole his fourth base.  Mieses committed a throwing error.

The Cardinals are 18-24 and are back in last place in the Texas League North.

Michael Perri (Bret Jacomet photo)

The Cardinals were defeated by the Marauders at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday.  The loss snapped a seven game winning streak for Palm Beach.

Reliever Zach Prendergast made a spot start, following the promotion of scheduled starter Angel Rondon to Double-A Springfield.  It lasted only 1/3 of an inning after he walked four and surrendered three runs.  Prendergast took the loss.  Patrick Dayton tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings and Mitchell Osnowitz added 1 1/3 scoreless.  Ben Yokley hurled the next three innings and surrendered three runs on three hits.  Bryan Dobzanski pitched a scoreless ninth.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Cardinals offense began chipping away.  One run came home in the third inning when Lars Nootbaar singled and scored on Zach Kirtley’s double.  A second run came in the fourth inning on Nick Dunn’s RBI double.

Palm Beach didn’t score again until the eighth when Player of the Day Michael Perri doubled to plate two.  The rally fell short, however, as the Cardinals couldn’t muster any scoring in the ninth.

Kirtley and Perri each had two hits.  Perri drove in two.

The Cardinals are 26-15 on the season and are in first place in the FSL South.
