Cardinals Minor League Notebook – September 22, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-0 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, center fielder Justin Toerner, hit a three-run home run in Memphis’ win over Gwinnett. Other standouts were Luken Baker and Clint Coulter.

Results from games played Wednesday, September 21.

Memphis 6, Gwinnett 5

The Memphis Redbirds topped the Gwinnett Stripers in a 6-5 contest at AutoZone Park on Wednesday afternoon. Starter Garrett Williams pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on three hits, struck out three and walked one.

New Redbird Kyle Leahy relieved Williams and surrendered three runs in 3 2/3 innings. Ryan Loutos threw a scoreless seventh. Kodi Whitley hurled a scoreless eighth and received his first win of the season. Genesis Cabrera tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ivan Herrera singled. Moises Gomez went to first on a wild pitch third strike. Luken Baker singled to score Herrera.

Clint Coulter hit a solo home run in the second inning to increase the Redbirds lead to 2-0. Gwinnett tied the score at 2-2 in the third, then went ahead 5-2 in the fifth.

Justin Toerner

In the sixth, Memphis retied the game with a three-run long ball by Justin Toerner. The Redbirds took the 6-5 lead in the eighth. Baker walked and Coulter singled. Baker went to third on a sac bunt by Toerner. A wild pitch sent Baker home.

Luken Baker

Baker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Coulter was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Herrera was 2-for-2. Toerner had three RBI.

On the base paths, Toerner was picked off and caught stealing. Herrera was picked off first base.

Memphis is 70-73 on the season and is in fifth place in the International League West, 16.5 games back of first place Nashville. Memphis is eliminated from playoff contention.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Gwinnett, Matthew Liberatore LHP (6-8, 5.42) vs. Mike Soroka RHP (0-2, 6.43) 6:45 CT.
