On Friday, September 24, pitchers Jack Flaherty and Dakota Hudson were activated off St. Louis Cardinals injured lists and Brandon Waddell was optioned to Memphis.

Jack Flaherty

The ace of the St. Louis Cardinals staff was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. His double-header Game 2 start in Chicago will be his 15th start of the season (and 90th of his career).

Jack Flaherty

This was Flaherty’s second IL stint in 2021. He first missed 60 games (June 1-August 12) with a left oblique strain in May and 28 additional games this time around (August 25-September 23) after suffering a right shoulder strain.

In order to make room on the active roster for Flaherty, left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell was returned to Memphis.

This time up with St. Louis, since Monday, September 20, Waddell did not pitch in game action.

Dakota Hudson

The Cardinals selected right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson as the 29th man for their Friday doubleheader in Chicago. In order to do so, he first had to be moved off the 60-day injured list, using the final open spot created when Daniel Ponce de Leon was outrighted (and subsequently released) this week.

Hudson will be making his 2021 debut after missing the season to date as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old had a long stretch of five rehab appearances, finishing with Memphis, and yielded just two earned runs in 18 2/3 innings.

For Saturday and onward, the Cardinals will have to option out another player so Hudson can remain with St. Louis.

Update

The Cardinals optioned out Jake Woodford on Friday, but recalled him on Saturday when reliever Justin Miller was returned to the 10-day injured list with continued problems with his right elbow.
