DSL Cardinals Blue 3 at DSL Twins 1

Benjamin Arias’ five strong frames led the C-Blue past the DSL Twins, 3-1.  The DSL Cardinals Blue (5-5) gained sole possession of fourth place in the eight-team South Division with the victory, 2 ½ games behind the DSL Rockies.

Arias, the first Cardinals Blue starter to throw five innings, held the opposition to a single score in his last inning of work.  The run was unearned because of a throwing error by catcher Leonardo Bernal on an attempted pickoff move.  Arias struck out nine, giving up three hits and issuing a free pass while hitting two batters.

Ronny Oliver and Esteban Contreras each pitched two innings.  Oliver negotiated around a hit and three walks with Contreras plunked a batter in the eighth and permitted a one-out single the next stanza, earning his second save.

Bernal was the sole C-Blue player with more than one of the team’s seven hits.  The 17-year-old Panamanian went 2-for-4 with a solo blast, his first professional home run.

Bernal’s third-inning bomb was his squad’s third tally in as many frames.  Shortstop Maycol Justo scored the initial run via left fielder Keyshawn Rombley’s sac fly after reaching via a fielding error by the Twins first baseman.  Second baseman Adari Grant doubled home third baseman Anyelo Encarnacion in the second after the latter stroked a one-out single.

Tuesday’s game:  at fifth-place DSL Twins (4-7), 10:30 am ET, TBA

DSL Cardinals Red 4 at DSL Rangers2 2

A balanced offensive attack joined forces with a good enough pitching performance as the C-Red flew past the DSL Rangers2, 4-2.  The DSL Cardinals Red (7-3) lead the eight-team San Pedro Division by 1 ½ games over four other squads, including the DSL Rangers2.

Seven C-Red players accumulated at least one of eight team hits with four different players touching home.  Right fielder Jeremy Ramos was the most productive, doubling once in four at bats, crossing home once and knocking in two.

Designated hitter Felix Taveras took part in two scores, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.  First baseman Francisco Reynoso reached base three times, singling once in two at bats with two walks and a run scored.  Left fielder Romtres Cabrera’s only hit in four at bats was his second triple preceding his run scored.

Ob the mound a Cardinals Red quartet of right-handers held the Rangers2 to four hits and two unearned tallies but did issue 10 free passes.  Wilmer Ortega blanked his opponents on two hits and five walks during his four-inning stint.

Juan Severino retired five batters, yielding an unearned score on a hit and two walks before Americo Lugo left Severino’s last base runner aboard.  Lugo (W, 1-0) recorded seven outs, giving up an unearned run on a hit and base-on-balls for his first win as a pro in 13 game appearances dating back to 2019.  Omar Yanez worked around two outs for his second save.

Defensively, the visitors were charged with three errors.  Third baseman Raul Guzman had two throws go awry as did catcher Maikel Hernandez.
