Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 8, 2021

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-4 on Wednesday. Our Player of the Day is shortstop Delvin Perez, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI in Springfield’s win over Tulsa.

Memphis 3 at Louisville 4 (10 innings)

The Redbirds lost a one-run contest in extra innings on Wednesday at Louisville Slugger Field.  Starter Jake Woodford tossed five innings and yielded one run on three hits, struck out two and walked two.

T.J. McFarland pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Connor Jones surrendered one run in the eighth.  Tyler Webb gave up the tying run in the ninth to send the game into the 10th and was tagged with a blown save.  Austin Warner allowed the walk off single in the 10th and took the loss.

Memphis got on the board first in the first inning on a solo home run by Juan Yepez.  Louisville tied it up in the fifth, but the Redbirds answered in the sixth with two runs on a second long ball by Yepez to make it 3-1.

Yepez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Ali Sanchez was 3-for-5 but made a throwing error.

The Redbirds are 21-35 and are in last place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 17.5 games back of first-place Durham.

Thursday’s game:  at Louisville, Tommy Parsons RHP (1-5, 6.19) vs. Riley O’Brien RHP (3-3, 4.99) 6:00 CT.

Springfield 6, Tulsa 4

The Cardinals defeated the Drillers in a 6-4 contest at Hammons Field on Wednesday night.  The win was cemented by a five-run fifth inning by the Springfield offense.

The Cardinals scored first on an RBI single by Delvin Perez in the third inning.  Tulsa tied it up 1-1 in the fourth, then took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the fifth.

Springfield responded in the home half of the frame with five runs.  Nick Plummer led off with a single and Luken Baker doubled.  Nick Dunn drew a walk.  Plummer scored on a ground out by Aaron Antonini.  Perez doubled to plate Baker and Dunn, and then scored on a single by Brendan Donovan.  Ivan Herrera followed with a sac fly to bring in Donovan.

The Drillers rallied in the eighth and put up two runs but failed to score in the ninth.

Memphis starter Dalton Roach pitched six innings and gave up two runs on six hits.  The right hander struck out five and walked two to earn his fourth win of the season.  Edgar Escobar surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings and Ramon Santos earned his first save with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Player of the Day Perez went 3-for-4 with three RBI.  Baker was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Donovan snatched his sixth base.  Perez stole his 14th bag of the season but was also picked off first base.

The Cardinals are 20-36 and sit in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 11.5 games back of first place Wichita.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Tulsa, Domingo Robles LHP (2-3, 5.15) vs. Gerardo Carillo RHP (1-1, 4.91) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 3 at Cedar Rapids 5

The Chiefs fell to Cedar Rapids at Perfect Game Field on Wednesday night as starter Wilfredo Pereira suffered his fifth loss of the season.  The right hander tossed 4 2/3 innings, yielding five runs, four earned on three hits, fanned four and walked two.

Enmanuel Solano pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Leonardo Taveras hurled two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Peoria put its three runs on the board in the first inning.  Jhon Torres led off with a single and Pedro Pages reached on an error.  Torres scored on a single by Brady Whalen.  Leandro Cedeno singled.  Zade Richardson’s single plated Pages and Whalen.

The Kernels tied the game in the home first.  The score remained at 3-3 until the fifth, when Cedar Rapids took a 5-3 lead, all against Pereira.  The Chiefs were unable to add on to their three-run initial burst.

Torres was 2-for-4 and Cedeno went 2-for-3.   Richardson drove in two.

Moises Castillo made a throwing error, his eighth miscue of the season.

The Chiefs are 22-34 and stand in last place in the High-A Central West Division, 15 games back of first place Quad Cities.

Thursday’s game:  at Cedar Rapids, Michael YaSenka RHP (0-5, 6.53) vs. Tyler Beck RHP (1-1, 2.20) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 6 at Lakeland 7

In a back-and-forth outing, the Cardinals were edged by the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Publix Field on Wednesday night. The Beach Birds took an early lead, but Lakeland rallied in the ninth for the walk-off win.

Palm Beach posted four runs in the first inning.  Masyn Winn hit a solo home run.  L.J. Jones walked and Jacob Buchberger singled. Todd Lott plated Jones on a double.  Buchberger and Lott both scored on wild pitches.

Lakeland put one run on the board in the home first.  The Flying Tigers scored again in the second inning to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the fourth, the Cardinals increased the lead to 5-2 on an RBI single by Winn. Lakeland answered with a run in the bottom frame of the frame, then tied the game 5-5 in the fifth.

The Beach Birds regained the lead in the seventh on an RBI ground out by Jones.  In the ninth, Lakeland scored two for the 7-6 walk off win.

Palm Beach starter Jose Moreno pitched four innings and gave up three runs on five hits.  The right hander fanned six and walked three.  Nathanael Heredia yielded two runs in two innings of relief.  Will Guay tossed 2 1/3 innings and surrendered the tying run in the ninth.  Guay was charged with a blown save.  Sean Kealey secured one out in the ninth but was tagged with the loss.

Winn went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the only Cardinal with multiple hits.  Winn also made a throwing error, his 16th miscue of the season. Guay made an error on a pickoff.

The Cardinals are 22-33 and are in last place in the Low-A Southeast East Division, 7.5 games back of first place St. Lucie.

Thursday’s games:  doubleheader at Lakeland, John Beller (0-3, 5.05) and Gustavo J. Rodriguez (0-3, 7.43) 3:00 CT (Game 1)

FCL Cardinals 0, FCL Astros 4

The rookie-level Cardinals (2-5) were blanked by the Astros 4-0 on one hit on Wednesday. All four Astros tallies were unearned as the Cards committed four costly errors.

Starter Enrique Saldana suffered his first loss of the season, after pitching five innings and giving up just one unearned run on five hits.  The right hander fanned six and walked one.

Roy Garcia relieved and surrendered two unearned runs.  Victor Villanueva yielded one unearned run in the seventh.

Brandon Hernandez was the only Cardinal with a hit, a single in the third inning.

Hernandez and Adanson Cruz both committed throwing errors.  Saldana and catcher Jake Burns each made an error on a pickoff.
