Monday, September 7, 2020 – St. Louis 1 at Chicago 5

A misfiring offense combined with sub-par defense resulted in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs (24-18) in the series finale.  St. Louis (17-16) captured the five-game set, three-games-to-two, and finished their eight-game road trip with a 5-3 mark.

The visitors generated seven hits but converted only one into a tally, instead hitting into three double plays.  Leadoff batter Kolten Wong reached base three times, going 2-for-3 plus a hit-by-pitch.  But the St. Louis’ #2, #3 and #4 hitters went a combined 2-for-12, stranding six base runners.

Number three hitter Paul Goldschmidt was the only other Cardinal with more than one hit with two singles in four at bats.  St. Louis’ sole score occurred in the seventh after Brad Miller touched home on a single up the middle by catcher Matt Wieters, who entered the game that inning for Yadier Molina, who exited with a left elbow contusion.

Starter Johan Oviedo (L, 0-2) was tagged for five runs on eight hits, three walks and a wild pitch in 4 /3 frames.  However, only three of the five tallies were earned due to throwing errors by third baseman Matt Carpenter and second baseman Wong.  The righty had only one inning in which he was not scored upon but with innings at a premium due to double headers sandwiched around the team’s final off day of the season on Wednesday, Oviedo remained on the mound.

The bullpen continued their sterling success by combining for 3 1/3 scoreless frames.  Tyler Webb recorded four outs, working around a hit and walk while stranding Oviedo’s last runner.  Seth Elledge issued a free pass in his clean seventh and Rob Kaminsky allowed a hit in the eighth.

St. Louis concludes the road trip with a 17-16 record, putting them 2 ½ games behind the Cubs in the National League Central. The two clubs split their now-concluded season head-to-head match-ups at five wins apiece.

Tuesday’s games:  vs. Minnesota (26-17).  Game 1 – 2:15 p.m. CDT, Carlos Martinez (0-1, 14.73) vs. Jose Berrios (3-3, 4.29) // Game 2 – 45 minutes post Game 1 finish, Daniel Ponce de Leon (0-3, 7.82) vs. Randy Dobnak (6-2, 2.72), FOX Sports Midwest // KMOX
