A five-run fifth propelled the St. Louis Cardinals (10-8) to a 9-3 romp over the Kansas City Royals in the series opener at Busch Stadium on Monday evening.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the home team used five fifth-inning tallies to break the game open.  The Cardinals added two more runs the next frame and capped the scoring with a single score in the seventh.

Paul Goldschmidt spearheaded his squad’s 12-hit assault, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two-run bomb comprising one of his two runs scored and two of his three RBI.  Brad Miller also went 3-for-4 with a base-on-balls, touching home twice.  The final Cardinal with a multi-hit effort was lead-off hitter Tommy Edman, who singled twice in four at bats with a walk, two runs scored and one knocked in.

Jack Flaherty (W, 2-0) turned in a strong effort, blanking the opposition on one hit over five frames.  The right-hander threw 41 of his 64 pitches for strikes in his longest stint of the season and second since the COVID shutdown. Flaherty outdueled the Royals’ Brad Keller (L, 3-1), who had not been scored upon this season, 17 2/3 innings over three starts.

A trio of St. Louis hurlers shared pitching duties over the last four innings.  Alex Reyes was unable to work around shortstop Paul DeJong’s throwing error, yielding a free pass and three-run long ball that finished his evening with just one out secured in the sixth.

Austin Gomber recorded five outs, issuing one free pass and fanning two.  Jake Woodford navigated around two hits for two scoreless frames.

Defensively, DeJong’s bobble was one of three uncharacteristic miscues by the Cardinals.  Third baseman Miller committed a throwing error and second baseman Edman was charged with a fielding miscue.

St. Louis improved to 4-1 on the current 12-game homestand. Just ahead are two contests each with the Royals and Pirates and three with the Cleveland Indians over the weekend. The Cards remain three games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

Tuesday’s game:  vs. Kansas City (11-18), 7:15 pm CDT, Adam Wainwright (2-0, 2.00) vs Matt Harvey (0-1, 9.00), FOX Sports Midwest/KMOX
