Wednesday, July 29, 2020 – St. Louis 0 at Minnesota 3

Starter Daniel Ponce de Leon’s eight strikeouts were not enough to prevent the St. Louis Cardinals’ third straight loss, a 3-0 shutout at Minnesota (4-1) on Wednesday evening at Target Field.  St. Louis (2-3) dropped both games of the two-game series.

Ponce de Leon (L, 0-1) fanned eight but lasted just 3 2/3 frames, yielding three runs on only two hits – an RBI double and solo home run, two walks and a hit batsman.  It took the righty a whopping 85 pitches to navigate that span as he threw 52 of them for strikes.

Four Cardinals’ relievers shared pitching duties the rest of the way, tossing a combined 4 1/3 scoreless innings.  Tyler Webb relieved Ponce de Leon with two on and two gone, permitting an RBI single before recording the fourth’s final out.  Kodi Whitley retired all five batters faced, striking out two, but Andrew Miller could not duplicate Whitley’s efficiency.

Miller recorded two outs but allowed two singles, putting runners at the corners for Ryan Helsley.  The first of five outs recorded by Helsley was a fielder’s choice as Yadier Molina chased down a Twins runner trying to score.

St. Louis’ offense was blanked on just three hits, all singles, and one base-on-balls.  They struck out nine times and have generated just four tallies over their three most recent contests, all defeats.
