On Wednesday, the Johnson City Cardinals won their second straight road game to take the 2019 Appalachian League Championship.

Results from game played Wednesday, September 4th.

Johnson City 8 at Burlington 6

A 13-hit onslaught carried Johnson City (2-1) to an 8-6 road victory over Burlington (1-2) (KC), making the JC-Cards the 2019 Appalachian League Champions.  The championship is the second in four years for Johnson City and fifth in the last decade.

As in Tuesday’s win, the visitors displayed a balanced offense featuring eight players with at least one hit and five garnering two hits each:  Malcom Nunez, Jhon Torres, Todd Lott, Aaron Antonini and Mateo Gil.  Nunez did the most damage with his two singles, scoring once and driving in three in five at bats.

Torres and Lott both went 2-for-4 and touched home twice, with Torres working a free pass while doubling and driving in one and Lott reaching base once on a hit by pitch.  Antonini singled twice in three at bats with a walk and RBI while Gil singled and doubled in five at bats with a run scored.

Defensively, the team nearly sabotaged themselves by committing five errors resulting in four unearned runs.  Catcher Antonini and first baseman Lott each bobbled once while shortstop Gil was charged with two miscues.

Starter Jake Sommers committed the final error during his three-inning stint.  The Wisconsin native, St. Louis’ 10th-round selection in the June 2019 First-Year Player Draft, allowed five tallies, one earned, while giving up three hits and a walk.  Four of the five runs charged to the righty came in his final inning of work.

A trio of Johnson City relievers held the Royals to a single score over the final six frames.  Will Guay (W, 1-0) fanned four in 3 1/3 innings, permitting a solo shot that was one of three hits yielded.  Walker Robbins retired both batters faced, stranding an inherited runner, and Dylan Pearce walked one over the final two innings for his first save.
