Became a Cardinal:
Signed as a non-drafted free agent on April 20, 2010. His bonus was $1.5 million, but was not payable until he received a visa to enter the USA, granted on October 8, 2010. Was originally known as Carlos Matias.

2011 Season
Began strongly in A-ball, but seemed to wear down after his promotion to high-A. The right-hander compared to a young Pedro Martinez struck out 98 in 84 2/3 innings with an ERA of 3.93.

2010 Season
Topped Cardinals minor leaguers in ERA (0.76), opponents batting average (.144) and WHIP (0.71) and ranked in the Top 10 in strikeouts per nine innings (2nd, 11.9), strikeout to walk ratio (3rd, 5.57) and toughest to hit a home run against 4th, 228.0-1). Led the Dominican Summer League in ERA, lowest BA (.144), strikeouts/nine IP (11.90) and WHIP (T1st).
