Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/22/13

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals had a camp day, with Memphis taking on Springfield and Palm Beach opposing Peoria on the back fields of Roger Dean. There was also an intersquad game.

Triple-A Memphis defeated Double-A Springfield while major leaguer Ty Wigginton helped Class-A Peoria tie A-Advanced Palm Beach. It was a rough day for pitching, as 14 of the 21 hurlers reported gave up at least one run. The Cardinals’ spring record against external minor league competition remains 8-13-6.

As he has been doing the last few seasons, Cardinals farm director John Vuch is sharing game stats. As always, the raw numbers are his, but the comments and players of the day are mine.

Friday’s Pitcher of the Day: Michael Wacha (pictured) continues to build his case to start at Memphis. On this day, Double-A hitters managed just one hit and one walk in five scoreless frames. The big right-hander fanned four.

Friday’s Player of the Day: Since being sent down from major league camp, shortstop Ryan Jackson is 7-for-11 (.636), including four doubles and a home run. On Friday specifically, Jackson had three doubles and drew one walk in five plate appearances. He scored one run.

Palm Beach (4-2-3) 6, Peoria (1-7-1) 6

Batting just .100 this spring for St. Louis, struggling Ty Wigginton was allowed to take as many at-bats as he wanted. With the WBC contingent back and the Cardinals playing their regulars more frequently as the regular season approaches, Wigginton used the minor league camp day to get in extra work.

Palm Beach did fight back at the end to tie.
