Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/17/14

Following are the highlights from the St. Louis Cardinals lone minor league game on Monday, March 17. In the game, Peoria 1 took on Peoria 2. Of course, the Cardinals went 1-1 on the day.

This spring, Cardinals baseball operations assistant Tony Ferreira is sharing highlights from minor league spring training contests. As always, the raw data is his, but the comments and awards are mine. Unfortunately, while all pitchers are accounted for, only top hitters’ data is shared.

When players are members of The Cardinal Nation Top 40 for 2014, their rankings are noted (TCN).

Monday’s hitter of the day: Jimmy Bosco hit exactly .300 at State College last season after being taken in the 13th round of the 2013 draft. The outfielder is not impressive physically at 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, but continues to hit the baseball. That is what matters, right?

Monday’s pitcher of the day: On a day when baseballs were bouncing all over the field, finding a minor league pitcher with a hitless line is impossible. For striking out two in his frame of work, the award goes to right-hander Anderson Gerdel. The 20-year-old Venezuelan native had a decent 4.1 strikeout to walk ratio at Johnson City last summer.

The Cardinal Nation subscribers can check out my in-depth report of Monday’s action, directly from Jupiter. This includes four Oscar Taveras plate appearances not included in the Cardinals’ data reported below.

Also on the site are the minor league spring training invitees, full minor league spring training game schedules and more. Seven-day free trials are always available to new subscribers.

The entire system view by level and position as last season ended is available via the Roster Matrix, free, right here at The Cardinal Nation Blog.

Tuesday’s games: The Cardinals will face the New York Mets with Triple-A and Double-A clubs traveling to Port St. Lucie and the Class-A teams playing on the back fields in Jupiter. I will likely attend the latter games.
