The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon (Saturday, March 9) that they have optioned or re-assigned 10 players to the team’s minor league camp, reducing the number of players in Major League Spring Training camp to 55, including 35 roster players.

The team optioned pitchers Génesis Cabrera, Giovanny Gallegos, Ryan Helsley, infielder Edmundo Sosa and outfielder Adolis García to the Memphis (AAA) roster.

The team re-assigned non-roster pitchers Seth Elledge, Evan Kruczynski, Williams Pérez and catchers Dennis Ortega and Julio Rodríguez to minor league camp.

Brian Walton’s take

Adolis Garcia (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

There is no surprise about the non-roster players, but the 40-man players may not have been the ones I would have predicted coming into camp. Still, their time can come later.

Garcia went just 1-for-20 (.050) while Sosa was respectable at the plate, going 5-for-17 (.294), including three doubles and a triple. The 40-man pitchers’ ERAs are Helsley at 5.79 (4 2/3 innings), Gallegos at 9.82 (3 2/3 innings) and Cabrera at 19.29 (2 1/3 innings).

Ortega went 1-for-3 and Rodriguez walked in his only plate appearance. ERAs include Elledge at 13.50 (2.0 innings), Perez at 4.50 (2.0 innings) and Kruczynski tossed two scoreless frames.

On The Cardinal Nation’s top prospect list for 2019, Helsley is seventh, Cabrera is 11th, Garcia is 16th, Kruczynski is 17th, Sosa is 28th, Elledge is 30th, Gallegos is 41st, Ortega is 43rd and Rodriguez is 45th. Only recent free agent signee Perez is unranked.
