Oscar Mercado went 2-for-4 and stole his fifth AFL base in five tries, but Surprise blew a win in the ninth on Monday.

Results from the Arizona Fall League game played Monday, November 6th.

Surprise 1 at Salt River 2

A ninth-inning bullpen failure resulted in a 2-1 walk-off defeat by Surprise at the hands of Salt River (10-11).  The Saguaros (9-13) remain tied with Glendale for second, four games behind Peoria.

The Rangers’ Tyler Ferguson (BS, 1) (L, 0-1) began the ninth seeking his first save in his first attempt.  But a one-out free pass followed by three consecutive singles with two gone left saddled the right-hander with his first loss in in 8 1/3 frames over seven appearances.

The visitors matched the Rafters’ seven hits but their sole tally came off the bat of LaMonte Wade (MIN), when the right fielder launched his second home run of the fall campaign.  It came with two gone in the fourth, setting starter Tyler Davis (TEX) up for his second win.

Davis faced just one over the minimum during his four-inning stint.  His sole runner was his own responsibility, reaching on a throwing error by the righty.  Five other Saguaros’ hurlers followed Davis to the mound, none from the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

In the starting lineup, the Cardinals were represented by Oscar Mercado and Andrew Knizner, who batted second and clean-up, respectively.  Mercado singled twice in four at-bats and added his fifth stolen base in five tries.  Knizner was hitless in three at-bats as the designated hitter, including grounding into a double play.  He reached base once with a walk in the first after Mercado had singled and swiped his bag.

Tuesday’s game:  at Glendale (9-13), 12:35 pm MST, TBA
