Results for the Arizona Fall League game played on Friday, November 3.
The Saguaros defeated the Rafters on Friday with the help of six Cardinal prospects. Four position players were in the starting lineup, and two pitchers made appearances out of the bullpen. Three of the four Saguaros runs were driven in by Cardinals.
Oscar Mercado, playing center field and batting third, went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Mercado’s fifth inning single drove in two after the ball caromed off the third baseman and traveled into left field. Andrew Knizner started as the Surprise catcher and batted clean up. Knizner launched a solo home run in the eighth inning for his only hit of the game. He fanned once in four at-bats.
Edmundo Sosa batted in the seventh spot and played third base. Sosa was 2-for-4 and scored a run. John Nogowski played first base and hit in the eight hole. Nogowski was 1-for-3 including a strikeout.
Josh Lucas and Arturo Reyes pitched the eighth and ninth innings respectively. Both pitchers tossed scoreless innings with identical lines of one hit allowed and one strikeout. Reyes earned his first AFL save with Lucas receiving a hold, also his first in the league.
Knizner, along with pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Jordan Hicks, will represent the Cardinals and the West Division in the AFL Fall Stars Game, to be played on Saturday night and televised on MLB Network.
Saturday’s game: The 2017 AFL Fall Stars Game will take place at Salt River Fields at 7:00 CT.
