Results from the Arizona Fall League game played Monday, November 13th.
A quartet of Saguaros hurlers combined for a two-hitter but Surprise still lost to the Scorpions, 2-0 on Monday. The defeat, combined with a win by first-place Peoria, leaves the Saguaros (11-16) a game away from post-season elimination.
Both Scottsdale tallies occurred in the second via a walk, RBI triple and sac fly. Those were the only two base runners allowed by the Rays’ Burch Smith (L, 1-2) over four frames. The righty fanned nine with 37 of his 55 pitches going for strikes. A trio of relievers limited the opposition to just one more base runner the rest of the way, none of the three with the Cardinals’ organization.
Andrew Knizner paced Surprise’s offense, going 3-for-4 and accounting for almost half of his team’s seven hits. The Saguaros’ number three batter smashed a sharp single to center with two gone in the first, and followed that up with a line drive single to right two innings later. The latter hit might have produced something had Michael O’Neill (TX) not been picked off first after leading off with a single. O’Neill ended up getting tossed by the first base umpire.
But back to Knizner’s strong performance. The first baseman opened the sixth with a 5-3 ground out but finished the day by lining another single up the middle in the eighth. This moves the 22-year-old’s Arizona Fall League slash line to .358/.403/.537/.940 in 67 at bats over 17 games. Knizner is fourth in the league in batting average, seventh in on-base, slugging and OPS percentage.
St. Louis’ other representative was outfielder John Nogowski, who began Monday in left but moved over to right after O’Neill’s ejection. The Florida native was hitless in four at bats. Overall, Surprise stranded seven on the base paths but only two even reached scoring position.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Salt River (12-14), 12:35 pm MST, Zach Lovvorn (1-1, 5.82) (KC)
