Results from the Arizona Fall League Military Appreciation Game played on Saturday, November 11.
In a slugfest on Saturday night between Surprise and Peoria, the Saguaros’ four-run lead was erased in a comeback over the final two innings by the winning Javelinas.
Two St. Louis Cardinals position players were in the starting lineup for the Saguaros. Center fielder Oscar Mercado hit leadoff and was 1-for-5 on the night with two strikeouts. Mercado’s lone hit was a fourth inning single, after which he stole his sixth base of the AFL season.
Mercado was involved in a scary outfield collision with right fielder and Twins prospect LaMonte Wade in the second inning as the latter’s head came into contact with the former’s hip. Mercado was uninjured, though shaken up, and remained in the game. Wade was carried off the field and taken to a nearby hospital with a concussion. His chest and back reportedly checked out ok. Mercado was able to catch the fly ball during the play for the out.
Here is video of the collision.
Edmundo Sosa played second base and batted seventh, finishing 1-for-2 with fifth-inning single. The infielder also drew two walks, and came around to score on a fourth inning grand slam by teammate Nicky Lopez. The second baseman also had a baserunning miscue when he was picked off first base in the third inning after his first free pass.
One Cardinals hurler made an appearance Saturday. Josh Lucas pitched the ninth, and after a ground-rule double, sacrifice bunt, walk and fielders’ choice, yielded the Javelina’s winning run to take the loss, his second in the AFL.
The Saguaros setback puts their record at 11-15 with one week left in the season. Surprise is in last place in the AFL West, four games back of the first place Javelinas.
Sunday’s game: No game scheduled.
