Results for the Arizona Fall League game played on Friday, November 10.
Surprise was dominant on Friday night, defeating the first-place Javelinas by the score of 11-5. Two St. Louis Cardinals position players and two Cardinals pitchers made appearances in this contest.
Right hander Sandy Alcantara was the starting pitcher for the Saguaros. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while fanning four and walking none. Alcantara was relieved Arturo Reyes. Reyes allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of relief. Reyes struck out two and walked one.
Center fielder Oscar Mercado and catcher Andrew Knizner were in the starting lineup. Mercado hit in the two-spot and was 1-for-5 with an RBI. The outfielder singled to plate a run in the fifth, a high scoring inning for Surprise. Knizner also singled in a run in the same inning. The number five hitter was 2-for-5 on the night; in addition to the RBI single, the catcher doubled in the second.
With a week left in the AFL season, Knizner is hitting .333 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Mercado is batting .261 with eight RBI and five steals in five attempts.
Alcantara has a record of 1-2 and an ERA of 4.20 in the AFL season to date. Reyes’ AFL ERA is 6.23.
Surprise is 11-14 and tied with the Glendale Desert Dogs, three games back of the Javelinas in the AFL West.
