The Saguaros dropped a tough one in Mesa on Friday night.  The Cardinals’ lone position player in the starting lineup made his presence known.  Catcher Andrew Knizner hit two long balls, his first of the AFL campaign.  The number five hitter began with a two-run shot in the fourth inning, followed by a solo shot in the sixth.  Knizner was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, raising his AFL average to .393. Knizner did make a miscue in the field, a passed ball in the sixth inning, his second.

Two Cardinals hurlers saw action.  Arturo Reyes pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning of relief, receiving his second hold. The right-hander has now tossed six scoreless AFL innings on three hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Jordan Hicks did not fare well in his ninth inning outing. Ask to protect a three-run lead, he gave up four runs on three hits and two walks. The right-hander took the loss for the Saguaros on a walk-off triple with two out.

The Saguaros fell to 4-6, two games back of Peoria in the AFL West.

Saturday’s game:  No game scheduled.  The Bowman Hitting Challenge will take place at 7:35 CT in Mesa. Participants have not yet been announced. On Monday, Surprise will host Salt River.
