Surprise 3 at Salt River 1

The Saguaros notched their first victory of the Arizona Fall League season, downing the Rafters, 3-1, on the road Wednesday evening.

The game was scoreless until the visitors broke through for a two-run fifth but the home squad answered in the bottom of the frame.  A seventh-inning tally iced the game for Surprise (1-1).

Right-hander Ryan Eades (MIN) was credited with the win, tossing a scoreless fourth.  He was one of six Saguaros hurlers on the game, none from St. Louis’ organization.  Miami’s Ben Meyer pitched the fifth, absorbing his first loss.

The Cardinals were represented in the Surprise lineup by Andrew Knizner and Edmundo Sosa.

Knizner hit in the five spot, and singled once in four at bats with two strikeouts.  The first baseman was caught looking for the second out in his first time up, following that up by grounding out, 5-3, to end the fourth.  He singled up the middle with two gone and the bases clean in the sixth but was stranded there.  Knizner struck out on a foul tip in his final at bat, the front end of a strike-em-out/throw-em-out double play by Salt River (1-1).

Sosa’s day was a bit more productive despite him going hitless in three at bats from the nine hole.  He reached via a hit-by-pitch in his first plate appearance but his teammates were unable to bring him across.  That was not the case in the fifth when the shortstop reached on a fielder’s choice, driving in his team’s first run.  Sosa eventually came around to score on center fielder Michael O’Neill’s (TEX) liner to center.  The 21-year-old was unable to plate his teammate on second in the seventh, instead lining out to first.  Sosa struck out swinging to end the eighth in his last at bat.  Defensively, Sosa and Knizner completed a classic 6-4-3 double play, erasing the lead runner in the seventh.

Thursday’s game: at Glendale (1-1), 12:35 pm MST, Steven Bruce (0-0, —) (TEX)
