Book Review: “All Roads Lead To St. Louis”

“You need to get out more,” are words I have been told more than once.

That is especially appropriate when considering my behavior as I am on the road. The combination of being highly singularly focused on St. Louis Cardinals baseball (majors and minors) and the fact I am funded solely through reader subscriptions leads me to spend just as many hours as possible either at the ballpark working or writing about what I learned while having been at the ballpark.

As a result, I am a terrible person to ask where to go out for a nice dinner or even a great place to stay in the various towns in which Cardinals teams compete. My honest answer for the former is whichever convenient fast food joint is still open after I leave the ballpark. My reply to the latter is wherever I can get the best rate, with stretching my expense dollar the overriding consideration. This is certainly not for everyone.

In other words, Rob Rains’ newest book is one I could not write, but I could clearly use. Co-written with his wife, Sally, Rob has released All Roads Lead to St. Louis – A Guide to the Cardinals and Their Minor League Teams. The 232-page book, published by the Peppertree Press, makes a stop in each of the cities across the USA in which the Cardinals have a presence.

For each location – from St. Louis to the Gulf Coast League and every one in between – directions to the ballpark, how to purchase tickets as well as some history of the team are provided. Recommendations for hotels and other sights in the area are highlighted.

Perhaps the largest coverage is given to restaurants, with numerous recommendations not only from the Rains, but from scout Marty Maier, Adam Wainwright and selected local celebrities. These sections you can really sink your teeth into!

Consider All Roads Lead to St. Louis to be a fine companion no matter where you travel to see Cardinals baseball.

After reading it, I have to agree. I do need to get out more!
