Thursday was the “Night of Little Offense” in St. Louis’ minors as the three teams seeing action managed a total of nine hits generating two tallies in all and three losses. Stefan Trosclair reached base three times and generated Peoria’s only score.

Results from games played Thursday, September 7th.

The Redbirds (1-1) were blanked on two hits, falling to the Sky Sox, 5-0, evening their best-of-five series at one game apiece.

Memphis’ entire offense consisted of a single by Magneuris Sierra, who went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.  The center fielder was credited with an assist at home plate.

Patrick Wisdom had the other hit, singling once in three at bats.  Defensively, Wisdom committed his second error of the postseason, a fielding miscue while playing third which led to two unearned tallies in Colorado Springs’ three-run fifth.  Wisdom switched to first base in the top of the sixth.

Kevin Herget took the loss, permitting three runs, one earned, on six hits, two walks and Wisdom’s bobble through five.  Miguel Socolovich and Arturo Reyes each went two frames, giving up a tally.

Friday’s game:  at Colorado Springs (1-1) (MIL), 7:00 pm CT, Ryan Helsley (0-0, –)

Peoria 1 at Quad Cities 4

Stefan Trosclair (The Cardinal Nation)

The Chiefs (1-1) were downed by the River Bandits, 4-1, on Thursday at Modern Woodman Stadium.  Each team has won one of the first two games with the decisive third contest to go.

Neither Peoria’s offense nor pitching got the job done.  A home run by Stefan Trosclair was the only thing preventing the visitors from being shut out and was one of only three Chiefs’ hits for the game.  Trosclair, our Player of the Day, reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a long ball and two free passes.   The second baseman swiped a bag but committed one of two Peoria miscues.

Ryan McCarvel and Nick Plummer garnered the other two hits.  McCarvel doubled once in three at bats with two K’s as the designated hitter while Plummer singled once in two at bats out of the nine hole.  Plummer was unsuccessful in his only stolen base attempt and was hit by a pitch.

Austin Warner (L, 0-1) went the first six innings, yielding scores in three of those six frames.  The lefty allowed eight hits, including a solo shot, resulting in four runs.

Ronnie Williams and Max Almonte each tossed an inning.  Williams yielded a hit and two bases-on-balls while Almonte worked around right fielder Dylan Carlson’s fielding error that put a runner at second with one gone in the eighth.

Friday’s game:  at Quad Cities (1-1) (HOU), 6:35 pm CT, Anthony Shew (0-0, —)

Williamsport 6 at State College 1

Bryce Denton (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The State College Spikes (40-35) finished their 2017 campaign on a down note, losing to Williamsport at home, 6-1.

Paul Balestrieri (L, 3-4) tossed just four innings, giving up four hits and two walks that produced three runs.  He fanned four.

A quintet of Spikes’ pitchers each went a frame.  Jason Zgardowski, Noel Gonzalez and Steven Farinaro tossed a scoreless fifth, seventh, and ninth but Will Latcham and Jesus Cruz were not as fortunate.  Latcham served up a two-run bomb in the sixth and Cruz was touched for a tally on two hits in the eighth.

State College’s only score was generated by a walk, wild pitch and RBI double in the seventh.  Alexis Wilson worked a free pass with two gone, advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and scored after Irving Lopez doubled to right.  Lopez’ hit was one of only four by the Spikes.  Two came off Bryce Denton’s bat, as he singled twice in three at bats with a walk.  Lopez went 1-for-4 with a free pass from the top of the order and stole a base.
